Dam Square and Royal Palace

The Amstel River was the site of a dam built in the 13th century, which was gradually fortified and widened to become the city square that now serves as the heart of Amsterdam.
Visitors to the square can admire the Royal Palace, once the Town Hall, which later became Napoleon's residence and a grand palace. Nearby, the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) is a popular venue for exhibitions, while Madame Tussauds Museum is also close by. The square also features The National Monument, the Hotel Krasnapolsky, and the de Bijenkorf department store on the other side. With so much to see and do, it's no wonder that the square is a major attraction for tourists.
